ORRVILLE — Robert L. “Bob” Saurer, age 96, of Orrville, died Friday, November 29, 2019, at Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare in Wooster, following a period of declining health.
Robert was born on a farm outside of Dalton on September 28, 1923, to the late Aaron and Luella (Smith) Saurer, graduated from Dalton High School in 1941 and served in the United States Navy on the USS Parker (Destroyer) in the Asiatic Pacific during World War II. He married Eileen M. McPerry on June 11, 1941. Eileen died on August 22, 2001.
He was an Orrville resident his whole adult life and worked as a Plant Engineer for Dairy Farm Products in Orrville for 38 years, retiring in 1980. After retirement, he was an equipment consultant for many dairies and cheese plants throughout Ohio and made many friends. He also worked for 6 years as a Service Supervisor for Oaks & Burger in Youngstown
Robert was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a former member of the American Legion Post 282 in Orrville. He was also a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 3446 in Orrville where he served in several capacities, including Post Commander.
Surviving are two daughters, Shary (John) Gregory and Susie (Rees) Davies, both of Orrville; four grandchildren, Tom (Jenny) Gregory and Johnny (Terrie) Gregory, both of Dalton, Jennifer Long of Orrville, and Tony (Jen Halt) Long of Louisville; twelve grandchildren, Amanda (Nick) Gerber, Alex (Ashley) Gregory, Madalyn (fiancée’ Todd Canal) Gregory, Samantha (AJ Wright) Burkhart, Jacob Gregory, Emilee Gregory, Abigail Gregory, Zachary (fiancée’ Hannah Borroff) Long, and Brayden, Maddox, Parker, and Olivia Long; six great-great grandchildren, Ian, Lilia, and Ivy Jude Gerber, Jaelen and Julianna Wright, and Jameson Burkhart; and a sister, June Matthews of Orrville.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Saurer; great grandson, Trenton Burkhart; and siblings, Dennis, Blanche, Russell, Kenneth, Glenn, Harland and Dwight.
Friends may call on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at Auble Funeral Home, 512 East Oak Street, Orrville, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
Services will follow at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, at the funeral home, with Pastor Vanessa Wertz officiating. Burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville.
