DALTON The road to a state cheerleading competition in March has been short, but challenging and exciting for Dalton’s cheerleaders. A tight timeline has meant a quick turnaround to learn routines and dances.
The cheer team set its sights on hosting a Wayne County Athletic League cheer competition. When that didn’t work out, the determined cheerleaders pursued other avenues to showcase their skills.

Briana Gallagher, who coaches cheerleading with Amanda Novak, said two seniors came to her classroom one day with a binder filled with Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators rules, athlete and coach waiver forms, and all the necessary paperwork for the OASSA Regional Competition.
Typically, schools learn their routines in the summer and attend multiple competitions, Gallagher said. Dalton’s cheerleaders only had a little over a month to prepare.
Eleven of Dalton’s cheerleaders competed at OASSA regionals Feb. 8 and qualified to compete at state.
The OASSA State Competition is March 1 at St. John’s Arena in Columbus.
