CROSS IT OFF: Dalton girls win district title; DHS boys team runners up

Dalton High School’s girls cross country team was named district champions Saturday at Lorain County Community College.

Dalton High School’s girls cross country team continues to advance and pick up titles this season. The team was named district champions Saturday at Lorain County Community College.

The high school’s boys cross country team placed second. Both teams head to regionals next week at Boardman.

Dalton’s Brianna Chenevey placed sixth (21:54.2) and Molly Soehnlen came in 10th (22:46.1). Janae Hostetler wasn’t too far behind in 11th place with 22:57.9. Bailey Chenevey came in 14th at 23:02.1.

The top four teams and the first 16 individuals advance to regionals. Aly Jackson came in 17th place with 23:27.2. Ava Fivecoat came in 21st with 23:31.5 and Miki Fath came in 50th (26:43.4). Rittman’s Pyper Gibson placed first (20:19.2)

The girls team was followed by Smithville, Waynedale, and Columbia. Central Christian placed seventh.

The boys’ team was runner up to the title. Elyria Catholic placed first, Black River placed third and Mapleton came in fourth. Central Christian’s boys team placed 13th.

In individual results, Dalton’s Mitchell Kutz placed third with a time of 17:34.5. Evan Hodkinson placed fifth (17:56.3). Carson Steiner came in 14th (18:45.5). Jordan Wenger (19:05.9) came in 19th. Kyle Pauley placed 40th at 20:01.8; Izaak Phillips was close behind in 44th at 20:12.3 and Karey Lehman placed 56th (20:58.1).

Waynedale’s Johnathan Varner came in first (17:18.6).
