Wooster — Hazel Marie Himes, age 93, of Wooster, died Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at West View Healthy Living in Wooster, following a period of declining health.
Hazel was born on May 6, 1927, in Kidron, to the late Noah and Agnes (Hofstetter) Nussbaum, graduated from Dalton High School in 1945, attended Bluffton College, and received a teaching degree from Ashland College. She married Harold D. Himes on June 5, 1949, in Kidron and he died on December 23, 2018.
She was a former elementary teacher for Dalton, Kidron and Strasburg Schools, retiring early to make her home for her family.
Hazel was a member of Salem Mennonite Church where she served as the Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, and was a member of Women in Mission. She enjoyed reading, walking, butterflies, gardening, and tending to her houseplants.
Surviving are five daughters, Julie (Gary) Spreng of Medina, Joan (Roger) Stump of Greenville, Janet (Leonard) Nussbaum of Shreve, Jean (Randy) Lengacher of Creston, and Jill (Doug) Gallion of Creston; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Karen (Andrew) Jao of Taipei, Taiwan; sister-in-law, Rosine Nussbaum of Dalton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Harold, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lynet Nussbaum; and brothers, Don and Herbert Nussbaum.
Friends may call on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at Salem Mennonite Church, 3363 Zuercher Road, Dalton, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
Services will be follow at 2:30 pm on Sunday, at the church, with Pastor Kevin Himes officiating. Burial will take place at the church cemetery.
Visitors are asked to wear masks, practice social distancing, and adhere to the posted signs and spacing limitations.
