EWFD hopes to begin staffing in February

DGKN staff report

DALTON  East Wayne Fire District Chief Kyle Nussbaum said he expects to begin scheduling staff members next month, which is a couple months ahead of schedule, thanks to some leftover money in the budget.

The fire district, which includes stations at Dalton and Marshallville and primary coverage area of northern Sugar Creek Township, saw levies pass for the first time in November, which will go toward staffing when taxes are collected.

Nussbaum told EWFD board members at the Jan. 18 regular monthly board meeting that there is a decent core of members inside the village, as well as in the township, and he has been receiving applications from new firefighters and EMTs, as well as former personnel who are expressing interest in returning to help the community.

The district has 29 members, and the EWFD board voted to have a limit of 40 employees, which the chief can maintain and organize as he sees fit, until further review. The board also agreed to discuss at a future meeting the process for applications from non-local residents.
