Superstar on Staff: Singing kindergarten teacher puts kids at ease

Barb Ressler

Reason for nomination:
Mrs. Ressler has made coming to school enjoyable for my son. He was really nervous about starting kindergarten but thanks to Mrs. Ressler, he wasn’t scared for long. She makes sure to start his day off right by greeting him and making him smile. Acknowledging her is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

How did you get to where you are today (education/ experience/inspiration)?
I have been a kindergarten teacher in the Dalton Local school district for 30 years. I even did my student teaching in the Dalton district with Karen Geiser. At the time I had to get special permission from Malone (College) University to student teach that far away from the college. But I really wanted to teach in the community where I was living. That started a friendship with Karen that continues to this day.

What do you love about working at Dalton Local Schools?
Connecting with my colleagues is one of the many things I love about teaching at Dalton Local schools. My colleagues have supported me both professionally and personally by praying for me, coaching me and sharing their lives in and out of school with me.

Tell us one interesting little fact about yourself that people would be surprised to hear.

Many people know that I enjoy singing. I use songs frequently in my classroom for learning and transitions. Did you know that I met my husband of 31 years, Winfred Ressler, in our college choir? I also did my master thesis on the impact that songs and rhymes have on students learning. Think about commercial songs and how they get stuck in your head. Students learn things more quickly and recall it faster when it is chanted or sung in short repetitive songs.
