Killbuck Savings Bank Co. Superstar on Staff: Melinda Wenger

Melinda Wenger

Reasons for nomination:
* She is always willing to work hard, think outside of the box, and really gets to know her students and goes out of her way to let them know she cares by attending activities or important events of students outside of the classroom.
* Ms. Wenger has gone above and beyond for not only my daughter Liliana Yutzy but for my entire family. Even though my daughter is in 4th grade this year, Ms. Wenger has continued to be a positive role model for Liliana. Ms. Wenger always makes sure that Liliana has a smile on her face. This is why I want to acknowledge Ms. Wenger.

What do you love about working at Dalton Local Schools?
It is an honor to be a part of this school system. The staff is great and always there for one another. I love working in the school system that I attended and my two children now attend. One of the main reasons I love my job are my students – past and present. My students put a smile on my face every morning and make me want to come to work everyday. I have learned over the years that being a teacher involves a lot more than teaching.

How did you get to where you are today (education/experience/inspiration)?
I have always wanted to be a teacher and a softball coach. I love working with students and watching them grow and I have played softball up until a few years ago when my own kids started getting busier with their sports. I graduated from Dalton High School and attended Akron University where I got my Early Childhood Degree. Right after college I obtained my Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Since then I have added a Reading Endorsement and the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement to also teach grades 4 and 5. When I first started out after college, for many years I worked in the preschool setting in a variety of positions. I was a teacher, family visitor, and a Preschool Director for a part time preschool. I also was a nurses aide in a hospital setting after obtaining an STNA license through the WCSCS adult program. I started with Dalton 8 years ago as an Intervention Aide at the Middle school. When the new school building was opened, I was hired as a Title teacher and I was coaching softball at the high school. For the last four years I have had the pleasure of teaching 3rd grade.

Tell us one interesting little fact about yourself that people would be surprised to hear.
I teach students in China (ages 4-12) English on the weekends. On a personal note, I will not leave the house in the mornings to take my children and /or myself to school until all of our beds have been made.
