MCC 29th annual Run for Relief Aug. 7

WOOSTER  Like running and enjoy chickens?

Join the fun at the Wayne County Fairgrounds at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 for the 29th annual Run 4 Relief 5K. If the longer distance is not in your repertoire, a 1K run will be at 7:30 a.m., according to a news release.

Registration is at https://www.ohiomccreliefsale.org/ under Attractions.

What do chickens have to do with running? All the registration money will be donated to Mennonite Central Committee to purchase flocks of chickens and chicken houses for families in Cambodia and around the world. When a family has a flock of chickens, they can have eggs for any meal.

When the chickens produce more than the family can eat, the eggs can be sold in the marketplace. This allows the family to purchase other foods and supplies for the family. One of the items bought may be school outfits for the children to attend school.

The Run 4 Relief is just one of the events at the Wayne County Event Center on the Fairgrounds, Friday, Aug. 6 and Saturday, Aug. 7.

On Friday evening, booths will be open for browsing and purchasing items such as plants, books and Swiss Pantry items. At 7 p.m., singer John Schmidt will perform and there will be stories of how MCC impacts lives around the world. Saturday morning starts with breakfast being served at 7 a.m. At lunch you can enjoy BBQed chicken. There are more food items to tempt your wallet. There are handmade egg rolls, homemade pie and hand-cranked ice cream. Lemonade, hot corn on the cob, baked potatoes with toppings and grilled sausage sandwiches will also be available. At 9 a.m., the Event Center will come alive with the sounds of auctioneers selling handmade quilts and wood items, and gift packages. There will be something for everyone.

The Artisan Market will display handmade dry goods that can be purchased. There will be a children’s area with activities for children and a train ride for them to enjoy.
