                                                     “Together Again”

ORRVILLE — “Together Again” — Dorothy M. McGrew, age 94, of Orrville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, December 7, 2021, at Aultman Orrville Hospital in Orrville, Ohio following a short illness.

Dorothy was born on December 29, 1926, in Smithville, to the late Albert and Irene (Harshbarger) Zook, graduated from Smithville High School in 1945, and earned a Nursing Degree from the Wayne County Joint Vocational School in October 1971.  She married William A. McGrew on February 28, 1948, in Wheeling, WV and they enjoyed 49+ years together while raising their five daughters. Bill died on December 18, 1997.

She worked as an LPN for Dunlap Memorial Hospital in Orrville for approximately 25 years, retiring in 1989.

Dorothy was raised in the Oak Grove Mennonite Church in Smithville, being baptized as a child in the creek behind the church. She was a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Orrville for 70+ years, where she participated in the Priscilla Circle and crocheted for the Angels of Mercy.  She enjoyed her many trips, cruises and world travels with family and friends. She previously volunteered with the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Dorothy enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, and being with her friends.  She enjoyed all sorts of music, and had many great memories singing with the Sweet Adelines Women’s Chorus. Also, she belonged to the aquatic exercise group at the Orrville YMCA for many years with a wonderful group of lady friends and then having lunch together. Her greatest joy was spending time with her large family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are five daughters, Anita (Mike) Woodward of Orrville, Vicki (Lew) Ramos of Ravenna, Barb (Tom – deceased) Austin of Orrville, Nancy (Mike) Leeder of Orrville, and Mary (Joe) Messenger of Orrville; 13 grandchildren, Bryan (Jenise) Woodward of Smithville, Bruce Woodward of Canton, Beth Woodward of Orrville, Joe Hahn of Orrville, Dan (Andrea) Hahn of NJ, Sarah (Mike) Paugh of Orrville, Sean (Jamie) Austin of NV, Ryan Austin of NV, Missy Austin of NV, Chad (Chika) Leeder of Germany, Melissa Leeder of Columbus, Mark (Naty) Messenger of Richwood, and Eric (Lacey) Messenger of Orrville, numerous great grandchildren; brother, Allen Zook of Denver, CO; sister-in-law Anna Zook of Denver CO., a special niece, Pam Jarvis of Orrville; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Zook; and sister, Louise Cheshire, dear sister-in-law Margo Graening, and many lovely family members and friends.

Private services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Pastor David Rittgers officiating. Burial will take place at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville.  A Celebration of Life may be held at a later date.


Dorothy’s daughters would like to give special thanks to: the quick and thoughtful response of the Orrville Emergency Squad, the kind treatment from the doctors and nurses at the hospital, special nurse Maria Cox, her dear aid and friend Grace Steiner, numerous church friends, Pastor David and Bob & Anne Snyder and the monthly dinners from Trinity, Chaplain Ray Pfahler at Aultman Orrville, her thoughtful neighbors and all her dear friends.
