KILLBUCK SAVINGS BANK CO. SUPERSTAR ON STAFF: Shannon Tomes

Shannon Tomes,
Food service director

Reason for nomination: Mrs. Tomes is a true superstar on staff. Coming to Dalton at the start of this school year, Mrs. Tomes has been faced with many challenges. From learning a completely new district to battling the food shortages caused by the pandemic, she has met them all with a “no problem” attitude. She is always quick to offer solutions and keep things running.
1. What do you love about working at Dalton Local Schools?

The hometown feeling of the tight knit community. I think it’s really neat that families stay and raise their children here. The staff has been amazing to make me feel welcome. They are always first in line willing to help me without thinking twice. Most of all, I enjoy seeing and being around the students knowing they are eating healthy, have full stomachs while concentrating on their school work, toward a bright future.

2. How did you get to where you are today?

After graduating from Brunswick High School I attended Akron University for a career in nursing. After a few years of realizing that wasn’t for me, I was fortunate to stay home with my 2 boys for several years. When my oldest started kindergarten I started subbing at Cloverleaf Local Schools, I was just looking for a few hours a week, which turned into 10 years. In my time at Cloverleaf I started as a sub and working latchkey.

Knowing my passion was in food service, I started in the kitchen at the elementary school on the serving line, snack bar, salad bar and onto lead cook helper. When the school went to remote learning I was in charge of meal pick up for over 400 families weekly. Which included 5 breakfast meals and 5 lunch meals. My former boss Carrie Beegle was associated with Dalton Local and for months kept trying to get me to think about the Food Service Director position. After several attempts of asking, I agreed to a meeting with Mr. Saxer. First pulling in, I knew instantly I wanted to be a part of Dalton School District. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have been blessed with being part of this incredible school district.

3. Tell us one interesting little fact about yourself that people would be surprised to hear.
I worked for my mom’s restaurants for years and loved the hustle of the restaurant business and hope to one day have my own breakfast restaurant.
