EAST UNION TWP. Fire destroyed a woodshop Wednesday morning in the 8900 block of Lincoln Way E in the township.
Firefighters contained flames to the woodshop, which is considered a total loss, and saved two other nearby buildings including a large two-story bank barn. No injuries were reported to residents or firefighters, according to Apple Creek East Union Township Fire Chief Jim Zimmerman.
Apple Creek units were dispatched along with automatic second alarm units at 3:52 a.m. Wednesday. The fire department thanked several departments on its Facebook page including Kidron, Orrville, East Wayne, Central and Wooster Township, along with Wayne County Sheriff, dispatchers at Wayne County 911, and South Central Fire District for covering another call for Apple Creek East Union Township.
Apple Creek units were back in quarters at 8:20 a.m., Zimmerman said in an email.
“We are extremely grateful for the assistance that we received from our neighboring departments, as well as the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, our dispatchers at Wayne County Communications, and the residents in the neighborhood who provided assistance and refreshments for the firefighters,” Zimmerman wrote. ” Thank you to Troyer’s Pantry for providing hot coffee and donuts as well.”
The fire investigation is being handled by the Wayne County Fire Investigation Unit, Zimmerman said. While the cause is still undetermined, it is believed to be accidental and appears to have spread from a burn pile near the structure that was being used to dispose of trash and other debris, Zimmerman said.
