Ellie Pauli, Dalton sixth-grade student, placed third at the Akron Regional Spelling Bee in March.
Ellie Pauli successfully spelled “samarium.”
But stumbled on “zocalo.”
Still, the Dalton sixth grader made school history as one of the rare Bulldogs to place at the regional spelling bee.
DMS English teacher Jessica Matz said Dalton has been represented at the Akron Regional Spelling Bee before. She has sponsored students five times.
“It is not every year that a speller from Dalton makes it to the regional,” Matz said, “so it is special when one of our students makes the top eight in the Wayne County Spelling Bee to move on.
“The Akron Regional Spelling Bee is well-organized and the pronouncer builds a good rapport with the students,” Matz said.
“He is very clear and correctly spells the words when missed. He does a great job of explaining challenges or situations to the audience. Ellie has been working very hard and represented DMS well. I enjoyed seeing her smile and nod to the pronouncer when she was confident about spelling her word.”
