Kinney, Jon P.
ORRVILLE — Jon P. Kinney, age 71, of Orrville, died Sunday, April 10, 2022, at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster, following a period of declining health/unfortunate house fire.
Jon was born on August 27, 1950, in Orrville, to the late Glenn Richard “Dick” and Eileen (Gandy) Kinney, his maternal grandparents were George and Lura (Bupp) Gandy. Jon attended Oak Street Elementary School, Orrville Junior High School, and then graduated from Orrville High School with the Class of 1968. In high school Jon participated in the OHS band, Latin Club, Golf, National Honor Society, College Club, French Club, Speech Team and Physics Club.
Jon attended the prestigious American University in Washington DC from 1968-1970 where he studied International Relations, and later transferred to Ohio University in Athens graduating in June of 1972 with a major in Journalism. Following his studies, Jon enjoyed a successful career in journalism as the former editor of Orrville Courier Crescent, editor of Kettering Oakwood (OH) Times, the Times News (ID), and as editorial director of Spectrum Publications, Orrville. Jon was the former owner/publisher of the Lodi (OH) Advertiser. Later in life Jon worked for Dell Industries in Idaho, and on a variety of short-term assignments.
Jon attended the First Presbyterian Church and was a member although he did not attend regularly. He greatly enjoyed photography and was an accomplished photojournalist, he owned an “Old Time Photo” kiosk for a period of time as a passion project and enjoyed documenting Amish culture and country through his photos. Perhaps above all, Jon loved baseball and was a life-long die hard Cleveland Indians fan.
Surviving are his daughter, Celia (Jason Hiibel) Kinney of Star, ID; and grandchildren, Olivia, Trey, Grace, Marley and Magnolia. Jon’s family would like to offer a warm thanks to all members of the Orrville community who assisted with his affairs in the later years of his life. They would also like to give a special thanks to Jon’s second and third cousins and Larry Gordon for his heroic efforts in attempting to save Jon from his enflamed bedroom that ultimately took his life.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, at Auble Funeral Home, 512 East Oak Street, Orrville.
Burial of cremated remains will take place at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville.
