Piatt, Ray N.

RITTMAN — Ray N. Piatt, age 86, of Rittman, died Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare in Wooster, following a period of declining health.
Ray was born on August 9, 1935, in Beallsville, Ohio, to the late Emmet and Edna (Pitman) Piatt, graduated from Norwayne High School in 1954, and married Janet M. Valentine on June 19, 1954.  Janet died on June 9, 2020.
He was the owner, operator and manager for Ray Piatt Excavating for 42 years, before turning the business over to his son in 2003.
Ray was a member of Orrville Christian Church where he participated in the Growing Christians Sunday School Class, was a former Elder, sang with the choir, and participated in several mission trips.  He previously served on the Rittman City Council, the Milton Township Trustees, the Board of the Christian Children’s Home of Ohio, and the Rittman Sports Boosters.
He enjoyed miniature ponies, euchre, playing his harmonica, and attending his children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchildren’s sporting events.  In his retirement he spent a lot of time at the Rittman Recreation Center where he was know as the “Chap” (Chaplain).
Surviving are five children, Greg (Joyce) Piatt of Rittman, Rayetta (Jerry) Shrake of Plainfield, IN, Bruce (Arthur Marcus) Piatt of New York, NY, Gene (Lisa) Piatt of Creston, and Doug (Jane) Piatt of Lexington, KY; seven grandchildren, Josh (Julie) Piatt, Joni (Stu) Riggenbach, Christina Shrake Kallai, Stephanie (Jeff) Taylor, Justin Piatt, Sean (Jessica) Piatt, and Brandon (Michele Lacey) Piatt; 10 great grandchildren, Carter, Ethan, Brennan Jude, Ramey, Reece, Jax, Breck, Mila, Zander and  Brennan Ray; and two brothers, Richard (Janice) Piatt of Brazil, IN and David (Marlene) Piatt of Rittman.
In addition to his wife, Janet, he was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde, Millard and Donald Piatt.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am on May 21, 2022, at Orrville Christian Church, 925 North Elm Street, Orrville.  Burial of ashes will take place at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Sterling.
Friends may call on May 20, 2022, at Orrville Christian Church, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm or on the 21st from 10:00 am to 10:45 am, prior to the service.
The family wishes to thank Ray’s caregivers and the staff at LifeCare for the love and care provided to Ray in his last weeks.
