John E. Foster, 72, of Wooster, died Sunday, July 17, 2022, unexpectedly at Wooster Community Hospital, with his family by his side.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at Greystone Event Center (Wooster). Funeral services will be Monday at 11a.m. at Greystone with Chaplin Curt Stauffer officiating. Burial will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery (Rittman), where military honors will be held. Online tributes may be made at In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chief John Foster Memorial Fund c/o Wayne County Community Foundation. This fund will support John’s passion with furthering the law enforcement community.

John was born November 11, 1949, in Bickmore, WV to Earl and Dora (Holcomb) Foster.

He graduated from Clay County High School with honors in 1969 and enlisted in the US Navy upon graduation. He served in the US Navy from 1970 to 1972, part of that time in Vietnam. John later earned a bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Phoenix.

He married Rebecca Wooster on August 17, 1974 and resided in Wooster.

John followed his calling and served as a law enforcement officer since 1982. He served as an officer in the village of Creston, Chief in the Villages of West Salem, Nashville and currently served as the Chief in the Village Mount Eaton since 2004.

John’s favorite pastime was spending time with his two grandsons. Whether he was watching his namesake John play baseball or at the range sharing his love of guns with Reed, John’s smile and wit always shown through. John was immensely proud of his son Rob that followed him as a law enforcement officer.

John was a member of the FOP #94. He was a certified range instructor. John was an active gun enthusiast, always promoting gun safety wherever he went.

John will be deeply missed by his wife Becky, two dogs Barney and Bella; son Rob (Erin) Foster of Wooster; grandchildren John E. Foster II and Reed R. Foster; sisters Erma, Sheila, Edith, Martha, Linda and Pam and brothers Dale and Kip.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jack and Ed and sister Fonda.
