DALTON  Elite athletes from across the state will take to the courts at Village Green Park on July 30 to compete in the 17th annual Dawg Days basketball tournament.

The Dawg Days tournament is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The tournament was created by Morgan Wenger who has served as tournament director for all 17 years. It is open to all players from third graders to adults.

There are seven divisions that are categorized by age: Puppy (entering grades 3 and 4), Junior (entering 5th and 6th grade), Biddy Ball (entering 7th grade), 8th grade (entering 8th grade), Young Bucks (entering 9th and 10th grades), High School (entering 11th and 12th grades) and Top Dawg (anyone).

There is a $100 fee for the Puppy-High School divisions and a $150 fee for Top Dawg. Winning teams in Puppy-High School divisions will receive medals while a $2,000 prize is up for grabs to the Top Dawg winner.

In addition to the action on the courts, a DJ will be playing music while the games are being played.

Fans can expect top-notch hoops action and they may see some familiar faces, too.

Some past high-profile players who have competed in the Dawg Days tournament include: former Ashland University athlete Angelo Edwards, NFL player Shawn Crable and professional basketball players Jeff Gibbs, Mario Edwards, Seger Bonifant and Nick Harney.

Wenger wants to see clear skies and exciting play on tournament day.

“As usual, we are hoping for good weather and a lot of good, competitive basketball,” Wenger said.

On July 26, Wenger wrote an update at www.dawgdaysbasketball.com, which contains information, stories, photos and more about the tournament.

All divisions are still accepting entries, he wrote. Top Dawg division teams can register on the day of the tournament. All other divisions must be registered by Friday, July 29 at noon. A detailed tournament schedule will be posted on the website by 3 p.m. July 29.
