DGKN staff report
KIDRON It’s been a big year for the volunteer fire department in this community, which just a couple of months ago had the grand opening of its new fire station and invited the community to help celebrate.
Steeped in tradition, the Kidron Volunteer Fire Department continues a popular event and offers another opportunity to draw local residents and visitors alike. Every year, people look forward to the chicken halves grilled by the volunteer firefighters and vehicles and Amish buggies alike line up as the familiar scent of that secret barbecue sauce seems to waft around the community.
For its 65th year, the annual Firemen’s Chicken Bar-B-Que will be Tuesday Aug. 2, at Kidron Park, 4434 Kidron Road, with sit-down chicken meals available as well as music and activities. Chicken only will be available as a drive-thru option at Central Christian School.
Organizers will cook 6,000 halves this year, according to an email from KVFD’s Chelsea Schlabach, which is more than has been grilled before.
Meals begin at 4:30 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided by Bridgestone at 6 p.m. The drive-thru chicken halves only portions (without the sides) will be available at Central Christian School beginning at 3:30 p.m. Chicken halves and meals are by donation and the proceeds benefit Kidron Volunteer Fire Department.
Pioneer Coffee will be set up, as well as Lerch’s donuts. Pony rides and a kiddie tractor pull also are planned.
Updates will be made on KVFD’s Facebook page.
