Zimmerly, John W.
Rittman — John W. Zimmerly, age 88, of Rittman, died Thursday, September 15, 2022, at Summa Health System Barberton Hospital, following a period of declining health.
John was born on April 28, 1934, in Sterling, Ohio, to the late Noah and Elva (Blough) Zimmerly and graduated from Norwayne High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Goshen College and his medical degree from OSU Medical School. He married Trula Detweiler on April 1, 1960 in Parnell, Iowa and she passed away on April 17, 1997. He then married Wanda V. Brunk on December 29, 2000, in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. Wanda survives.
After medical school, John worked in a Mennonite hospital in Aibonito, Puerto Rico for 3 years, and as a family physician in his own practice in Jackson, OH for 40 years, retiring in 2001.
In Rittman, John was an active member of Crown Hill Mennonite Church teaching Sunday school and assisting with church historical archives. He enjoyed researching family history and genealogy, farming, and wood working.
Surviving are three children, Sara (Jeff) Ryan of Columbus, Steven Zimmerly of Calgary, Canada, and Joanne Zimmerly of Chicago, IL; two grandsons, Matthew Ryan of Colorado Springs, CO, and Jacob Ryan of Dallas, TX; siblings, Ruth (Ken) Kurtz, Paul (Doris) Zimmerly and Tim Zimmerly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, James Christian Zimmerly, Martha Ellen Zimmerly, and Noah F. Zimmerly Jr.
Friends may call on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at Crown Hill Mennonite Church, 9693 Benner Road, Rittman, from 9:30 am to 10:45 am.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, at the church, with Pastor Thomas Dunn and Dan Hooley officiating. Burial will take place at the Crown Hill Mennonite Cemetery in Rittman.
