Dalton High School’s wrestling team competed in Lexington, Ky. to get a taste of what a post-season match might be like.

DGKN staff report

Dalton’s head varsity wrestling coach said going into the season, he had his mind set on going into unfamiliar territory and wrestling a team that the Bulldogs had never wrestled before. The goal was to create a scenario the wrestlers might face in the post-season.

Dalton’s high school wrestlers did just that over the holiday break.

The team traveled to Lexington, Kentucky, and represented Dalton, Ohio, well.

“We competed at a 26 team individual tournament at George Rogers Clark High School,” Coach Kenton Lemon said in an email. “I knew going into this season that I wanted to go somewhere and wrestle someone that we had never seen before, in an unfamiliar place. Our goal was to try to find a setting that was as similar to wrestling in the post season as possible. It was good to see some other styles of wrestling and get our first true road trip under our belt.”

Greyson Siders and Seth Ryder both won their respective weight classes. Finishing third were Cohen Riggenbach and Bram McCourt. Jaxon Ryder finished fourth.

The team finished second overall.

“Of course, we were happy with our placement as a team but ultimately I think everyone knew that if we could’ve flipped a few matches in the semis we would’ve won the tournament,” he said. “We have a very solid group of kids that are willing to put in the work, we just have to continue to carry what we are doing in practice to the mat in competition.”
