Kidron Volunteer Fire Department members had a rough morning when they were called out to a “large unknown type fire” at 3:33 a.m. Jan. 26 next to the railroad tracks at Elton Road.

Several sawdust piles were on fire, according to a post on KVFD’s Facebook page.

“Sixteen firefighters responded, upon arrival we found two large mulch piles on fire at the sawmill next to the tracks,” KVFD Fire Chief Jon Peters said in an email. “They were not near any structures, but it took over an hour to extinguish with around 4,000 gallons of water and foam. No injuries reported and cause is undetermined, but appears to be accidental.”

The fires were reported by a passing train.

All trucks were back in the station by 5:30 a.m.
