Karen R. Steiner, 87

Karen R. Steiner, 87, of Orrville, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2023 at Lifecare Hospice in Wooster after a brief illness. She was born December 19, 1935, in Smithville, to Wilbur and Adeline (Neuenschwander) Berkey and graduated from Smithville High School in 1953. She married Doyle Steiner on September 11, 1954 in Smithville. They were married for over 65 years until his death in 2020.
Karen, a humble servant of her Savior Jesus Christ, followed God’s leading in starting Ohio’s first Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) class.  Originating in Wadsworth in 1970, BSF spread over time to other locations in the surrounding areas, including Wayne, Summit, and Stark Counties and beyond.  She humbly served as the BSF Teaching Leader in Wadsworth for 22 years and returned as a faithful BSF class member for the past ten years.  She also served as Coordinator of Women’s Ministries for The Chapel in Akron for seven years in the 1990’s.   In her later years, she was employed at her husband’s CPA firm Steiner and Associates.
Karen valued the many friendships she had through BSF, The Chapel, and most recently at OrrVilla.  She enjoyed spending time with family and attending the activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a faithful church attender all her life and participated in The Chapel’s Choir for many years.  In her younger years, she frequently taught children’s Sunday School.  Karen’s faith and trust in God and love of family were very important to her and leave a legacy that will be remembered by those who knew her.
She is survived by her three children, Eddie (Jane) of Millersburg, Gary (Jane) of Orrville and Vonda (Jeff) Kreis of Dalton; six grandchildren, Angie (Rick) Stjernholm, Kevin (Laura) Steiner, Brian Steiner, Christina (Darren) Gerber, Melissa (Matt) Allen and Holly Kreis; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan, Saralyn and Abigail Stjernholm, Adeline Steiner, and Elliana, Aubrielle and Liviana Gerber; brother Ted (Joan Kennedy) Berkey, sister Beth (Jesse) Hamman, and sister-in-law, Emma Hicks.
The family extends its heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the staffs of Aultman Hospital, Shady Lawn Nursing Home, and Lifecare Hospice for the outstanding compassion and care provided to Karen in the last weeks of her life on earth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bible Study Fellowship,, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association,, or Central Christian Schools,
All who wish to gather and celebrate Karen’s life are invited to a meal and a time of fellowship, remembrance, and sharing at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Oak Grove Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall, 7843 Smucker Road, Smithville, Ohio.  Private family graveside services will be held.  There will be no calling hours.
