Lady Dawgs cruise through to districts

The start of the Division IV Northeast 3 sectional tournament was positive for Dalton High School’s varsity girls basketball team. The No. 3 Lady Dawgs easily beat Oberlin in the sectional semifinal. A sectional final win over Open Door Christian secured Dalton a spot in the district tournament.

Dalton defeated No. 11 Oberlin 62-9 in the sectional semifinal Feb. 15. Ella Lunsford was on top with 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Kylee Johnson totaled nine points, four boards and three assists. Grace Dorffer recorded eight points, three rebounds and two assists. Jacey Clark scored eight points. Kendall Maibach finished with six points and five boards. Ellie Miller, Sarah Witmer and Mya Geiser combined for six points. Sydney Geiser grabbed five rebounds and scored two points.

The Lady Dawgs bounced No. 10 Open Door Christian from the tournament with a 71-15 win in the sectional final Feb. 18. Johnson guided Dalton with 21 points, one rebound and two assists. Dorffer added 13 points, five boards and four assists. Ellie Miller finished with seven points. Geiser scored six points, grabbed two rebounds and passed one assist. Sophia Surmay had five points and one board. Lunsford ended with five points, one rebound and five assists. Maddy West and Caroline Chubbuck both had three points each. Josslyn Reynolds, Mya Geiser and Clark all scored two points. Maibach pulled down four rebounds, scored two points and dished two assists.

Dalton will face No. 2 Waterloo in the district semifinal game Feb. 22.

“We need to have two good practices to prepare for a talented Waterloo team,” head coach Katie Miller said. “They not only can score in many ways on the offensive end of the floor, but they also bring a lot of different defensive looks that we will need to be ready for.”

Waynedale wins sectionals

Waynedale varsity girls were named sectional champs with their win over Mapleton 61-27.
