Glen D. Smucker, 73
Orrville — Glen D. Smucker, age 73, of Orrville, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023, at his residence in Orrville, following an extended battle with ALS.
Glen was born on November 14, 1949, in Wooster, Ohio, to the late Merl and Grace (Brownson/Schwary) Smucker and graduated from Smithville High School in 1968. He then obtained his Bachelor’s of Science in Farm Education from The Ohio State University. He married Lois M. Rittenhouse on May 29, 1971, at the Smithville Mennonite Church, and they have been happily married for nearly 52 years.
He worked as a self-employed dairy farmer on the family farm for years, and later began hydroponic farming before retiring in 2019 due to his deteriorating health.
Glen was a longtime member of Fairhaven Mennonite Church where he taught Sunday School, served as song leader, and as an Elder. He took Practorium Training (Advance Biblical Studies) at Orrville Grace Brethren Church. He enjoyed music, woodworking, carpentry, and helped two of his children build their homes, including one in Papau New Guinea. He sang with his wife in the Akron Symphony Choir, Wayne County Choral Union, Tuscarawas Philharmonic Chorus, sang in the Messiah at Oak Grove, and sang with the Cantata singers. He also played percussion with the Orrville Community Band.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are five children, Sam (Deb) Smucker of Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea, Katie (Jim) Yoho of Port Charlotte, FL, Diana (Eric) Smail of Orrville, Mike Smucker of Orrville, and Debbie (Mitch) Zimmerman of Orrville; 17 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren with 1 on the way; two sisters, Josie (Bob) Smith of Emerald Island, NC, and Gorda DePasqua of Denver, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from 5-8pm on Monday, May 8, 2023, at Orrville Grace Brethren Church, 2200 Paradise Road, Orrville.
Services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, at Orrville Grace Brethren Church with Pastor Allen Imhoff officiating. Private family burial will take place at the Smithville Mennonite Cemetery.
