ORRVILLE While city firefighters battled one blaze late June 12 a small fire broke out in another structure in the city.
Orrville Fire department was dispatched at 9:28 p.m. June 12 to the area of Mohican Avenue and Penn Avenue for a reported commercial structure fire, according to a post on Orrville Firefighters Association Facebook page.
Heavy smoke was visible when firefighters arrived and they reported a large commercial complex with heavy fire through the roof on the southwest corner.
The Facebook post states that responders had to cut the locks off the gate to gain access to the property. Remaining crew members tethered the hydrant at the drive, and lay 800-feet of supply line. The ladder truck was utilized and an engine supplied the water from the hydrant while other firefighters kept a line on an adjacent attached building to keep the fire from spreading. Fire was kept to the building where it began but unfortunately the building and its contents sustained heavy damage.
As all this was transpiring, the Facebook post states, an additional structure fire was dispatched on the city.
“This fire brought in several of our mutual aid partners from neighboring cities,” the Orrville Firefighters Association post states. “Medic 62 responded to this location from the original fire, and found a small smoldering fire in the basement & extinguished it without further damage with the assistance of the “back fill” engine from Kidron Volunteer Fire Department which was standing by in our station in the event of any addition calls.”
Units operated on scene at the original fire until 3:30 a.m. June 13 before returning tothe station to inservice the apparatus and equipment used. The fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The Facebook post expressed a huge thanks to all their mutual aid partners, dispatch, the excavation company and additional agencies who assisted in any way.
