Dalton Local Schools is looking to hire substitute bus drivers – as many subs as possible.
The substitute bus driver shortage has been a struggle for all schools in Ohio for the last few years, according to Patrick McGinty, treasurer for Dalton Local Schools. He said in an email that Dalton has been fortunate in years past that some local individuals had earned their bus license to sub for the school district but because of some of the regular drivers retiring, those subs are being moved into the regular routes – opening up more sub positions.
“We are ideally looking for as many subs as possible, we use a lot throughout the year especially with sporting events that have early leave times during normal routes,” McGinty wrote in the email. “We are also looking for van drivers.”
McGinty said that van drivers require similar qualifications as bus drivers, but they are able to train and certify van drivers all in house.
Qualifications include: Class B CDL; Air Brake endorsement; Passenger/School bus endorsement; preservice training – District paid for and training with an OBI instructor, which Dalton has one in house.
McGinty noted the qualifications may seem like a lot but he assured those interested in applying that the school system will help walk candidates through the process.
Starting July 1, sub pay scales are as follows: Sub Bus driver normal route – $85 lump sum per day; van driver – $20 per hour; sub bus driver for athletics/field trips – $20 per hour.
