Marjorie Ellen Smith, 91

Marjorie Ellen Smith, known to her loved ones as Marge, passed away on October 12, 2023, at the age of 91 in Dalton, Ohio. She was born on August 12, 1932, in Coshocton, Ohio, to Ronald and Gladys (Hultz) Phillips. Marge was preceded in death by her husband, William Glenn Smith, whom she married on November 4, 1955, and her brother, Bill Phillips.

Marge was a cheerful person who was always willing to lend a helping hand in her local community. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and her family meant the world to her. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (John) Hayes, her son, Phillip (Gretchen) Smith, four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Marge attended Ridgewood High School in West Lafayette, Ohio, where she graduated in the Class of 1950. She further pursued her passion for beauty by attending Beauty School.

Throughout her career, Marge served as a hairdresser and beautician, bringing joy and confidence to her clients. She would oftentimes go to clients’ homes to style their hair as the need arose.

She was an active member of the Dalton, Ohio community and was a long-time member of the Dalton United Methodist Church, where she found solace and strength in her faith.

In her free time, Marge enjoyed participating in various community organizations and events. She was a member of the Dalton Ohio Rotary, Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce, and Holidays Festival. Marge also contributed her time and efforts to the American Red Cross Canteen. Her commitment to her community was recognized when she and her husband were named Dalton Citizens of the Year in 1989. Marge and her family were also proud participants in the Yankee Peddler Festival from its inception in 1973.

Marge’s warm and caring nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love and dedication to her family and community will continue to inspire and touch the lives of many.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Marge’s life will be held at Dalton United Methodist Church, located at 204 West Main Street, Dalton, Ohio, on Monday, October 30, 2023 with Pastors Dave Martin and Jim Copenhaver co-officiating. Visitation will take place from 11am to Noon, followed by the funeral service at Noon with burial at Dalton Cemetery. A luncheon will be served afterwards.
