DALTON – Ronald W. Gardner, age 87, passed away on November 28, 2023.

Born in East Greenville on January 11, 1936 to the late Homer and Gladys (Klein) Gardner, Ronald had been a resident of Dalton since 2002, previously of Massillon. He retired from Republic Steel after 38 ½ years of service in the mill office. A member of Chapel of the Cross Global Methodist Church, he was inducted into the Stark County Softball Hall of Fame in 2008 as an umpire.  He loved softball and had played all three years of high school on the varsity football team for Washington High School in Massillon.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew; brothers, Homer Jr., and Robert Gardner; sisters, Wilma (Ronald) Domer and June (Leslie) Sandwith; and brothers-in-law, Ronnie Davis, and Richard “Dick” Yerian. Ronald is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carol Gardner; sons, Terry (Pam) Gardner of Brookpark, Timothy (Lisa) Gardner of Dalton, and Todd (Susan) Gardner of Massillon; grandchildren, Chad (Katie) Gardner, Chase (Michelle) Gardner, Devon (Phil) Gasser, Ashley (Brian) Williamson, Brittany (Tyler) Herzog, and Courtney Gardner (Quintero Sears); great-grandchildren, Cameron, Gracie, Harper, Wesley, Charlotte, Emma, Keegan, and Brooks; brothers, Jack (Cindy) Gardner, and Donald (Rose) Gardner; sisters, Joyce Yerian, and Sue Davis; sister-in-law, Ronna Gardner; close friend of the family, Todd Shanklin; many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

The family wishes to thank the employees of Brewster Park who took great care of him in his last months.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Cross Global Methodist Church, 14411 Orrville St. N.W., North Lawrence, OH 44666 with Pastor Phil Hoverstock officiating. A private interment will be held by the family at East Greenville Cemetery.  Calling hours will be Monday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton, OH, 44618 and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at Chapel of the Cross.  Memorials may be made to the church.
