James T. “Jim” Hirst, 77

Dalton — James T. “Jim” Hirst, age 77, of Dalton, formerly of Barberton, died Saturday, February 17, 2024, surrounded by family at his home in Dalton, and following a period of declining health.
Jim was born on April 4, 1946, in Barberton, to the late James and Evelyn (Kirk) Hirst, graduated from Barberton High School in 1965, and served in the United States Army during Vietnam War, stationed in Germany.  He married Elizabeth A. “Betsy” Simon on December 20, 1975, in Apple Creek.  Betsy survives him.
He worked as a welder and welding instructor for Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton for 32 years.  Following retirement from B&W, he worked for Scott Process Systems in Hartville for 10 more years.
Jim was an active member of Living Water Church in Dalton.  He was fully committed to his faith in Jesus, never missed a Sunday, and was always ready with a joke.  Jim was a scratch golfer and his home away from home was Spring Hills Golf Club.  He enjoyed working, golfing, his red Mustang, western movies, and serving at the church.
In addition to his wife, Betsy, he is survived by two sons, Jeff Hirst of Massillon and Mark (Deb) Hirst of Dalton; a daughter, Laura (Steve) Miller of Massillon; five grandchildren, Megan Hirst of Orrville, Victoria Hirst of Smithville, Allison Hirst of Dalton, Quentin Hirst of Brewster, and Grady Hirst of Dalton; a great grandson, Jay Suttle; and a sister, Linda (Andy) Hodavan of Portage Lakes.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey B. Hirst, Jr.; sister, Shirley Smith; and brother, Bill Hirst.
Friends may call on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Living Water Community Church, 200 N. Kurzen Road, Dalton, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
Services will be follow at 7:00 pm on Friday, at Living Water Community Church, with Pastors Jason Boyer and Dan Hostetler officiating.  Burial of cremated remains will take place later at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, where military rites will be observed.
