Roy Mellott Sr.

DALTON – Roy J. Mellott Sr., age 88, passed away on June 19, 2026.

He was born on April 19, 1938 in Round Bottom, OH in Monroe County and was one of seven children of the late Dow L. and Mary (Eckelberry) Mellott.  Roy had been a long-time resident of the Dalton / Massillon area.  A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve for 10 years, he retired from Crown Steel in Orrville.  Roy was also a farmer, had worked for Ohio Power, and was proud to say that he helped build State Route 7 along the Ohio River.  A member of Calvary Chapel in Massillon, he had also been a twelve-year member of the Dalton Lions Club and a past member of the Ohio Country Music Association (Canton Chapter).  A true outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with his family.

In 1982, Roy was featured in an article in Outdoor Sportsman magazine for catching a 7 ½ pound walleye.  He also went to Columbus, OH where he received an award for catching a 28-inch walleye.  Roy was known for catching large fish and was awarded many pins from the state of Ohio for doing so.  He truly loved his fishing.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his great grandson, Parker Mellott; sisters, Edith Goddard, Hazel Mellott; brothers, William Mellott, Ed Mellott.  He is survived by his loving wife and fishing partner of 62 years (11 days short of their 63 anniversary) Shirley; sons, Roy J. Mellott Jr, Steven Mellott (Lori Groff); daughter, Teresa (Chris) Siffrin; granddaughters Cortney Quinn, and Paige Mellott; great grandsons, Gage, Jack, and Mason; great granddaughter, Calia; sisters, Phyllis (Ron) Ollum, and Cora Tomolonis; other family and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at 12 p.m. at the Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton, OH, 44618 with Pastor Josh Pizer, officiating.  Calling hours will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.  Online obituary and guest registry are available at www.zakmonbarrenfh.com
