SUGAR CREEK TWP. A 41-year-old Orrville man died in a two-vehicle crash Nov. 12 at U.S. 30 and Kohler Road when the pick-up truck he was riding in struck the rear of a semitractor-trailer, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
At about 2:38 p.m., a 2024 International semi-truck was pulling a 2022 Hyundai van-trailer while traveling east on U.S. 30. The 34-year-old New Jersey driver stopped to make a left turn onto Kohler Road when he was struck in the rear by a Toyota pickup.
The 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup was operated by 45-year-old Robert Burr, of Massillon, who was traveling eastbound on U.S. 30. Burr was extricated by mechanical means and taken by Life Flight to an area hospital with serious injuries, the news release states.
Adam Sartin, 41, of Orrville, was the right front passenger in the Toyota pickup truck and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, the news release states. The driver of the commercial semitrailer did not sustain any injuries, the release states.
U.S. 30 was closed for approximately two hours while the crash scene was being investigated.
Safety belts were not worn by the passenger or driver of the Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck.
The Ohio State Patrol was assisted on-scene by Dalton Police Department, Kidron Fire Department, Wayne County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Rigz Towing.
The crash remains under investigation, according to a Nov. 12 news release.
Kidron Volunteer Fire Department also posted an incident release on the department’s Facebook page. Initially, the fire department had been dispatched to double entrapment and vehicle possibly on fire. On scene, crews discovered there was no fire but the vehicle had sustained heavy front-end damage and both occupants had to be cut out of the vehicle.
“We would like to thank Dalton Fire Department, Cleveland Clinic Critical Care Transport , Ohio State Highway Patrol, Rigz Towing, and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office for their assistance,” the post states.
Kidron Fire’s post also issued a reminder: “When you are a passing motorist of an accident scene, PLEASE, put your phone down and concentrate on your driving. It doesn’t feel good standing on the highway while you are trying to get a video to show your friends. We want to go home to our families too!!”
