Gerber, Daniel Ray
Daniel Ray Gerber, of Concordia, KS died January 25, 2021 at 8:30 AM in Concordia, Kansas.
He was born November 13, 1938, at rural Dalton (Wayne County) Ohio, the oldest child of Irvin Daniel Gerber and Bonnie Jean (Payne) Gerber. He graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School, Harrisonburg, VA in 1956. He graduated also from Goshen College, Goshen, IN, in 1963 and from the University of Denver in 1959 with a Ph.D. He taught at Baugo Community Schools near Elkhart, IN for 3 years; the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA, for 7 years; and then he served as a college administrator for 10 years at Southeast Community College at Fairbury, NE, and then for 14 years at Cloud County Community College at Concordia, KS. He served also on the elected Board of Trustees for 8 years at Cloud County Community College. Nearly his entire professional life was devoted to teaching and administration at public schools, colleges, and universities.
In 1959, he married Virgie Verda Rediger in Milford, NE. Two sons were born to that union: Daniel Timothy Gerber and Jared Dana Gerber. That marriage ended in 1986. In 1990, he married Amaryllis A. Holloway at Fairbury, NE, who survives.
Throughout his life, he was active in sports (particularly softball), woodworking, gardening, travel, reading, and music. He sang for 14 years with the male a cappella trio “Dan, Van, & The Man” that included also A.G VanKooten and Dr. Paul Nelson. The trio sang at numerous religious and civic events throughout North Central Kansas and Nebraska. During his later years, he also served numerous civic Organizations- particularly those associated with older citizens such as the Concordia Senior Center.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents, all aunts and uncles, and one brother-in-law, Dr. Harry King, Hickory, NC; Survivors include his wife, Amaryllis (Amy), of Concordia, KS; his two sons, Dr. Daniel Timothy Gerber (spouse, LuAnn) of Holmen, WI, and Jared Dana Gerber (spouse, Kristine) of Omaha, NE; one brother David Keith Gerber (spouse, Janice) , Harrisonburg, Va; and five sisters, Carolyn Jane Martin (spouse, Glenn), Orrville, OH; Rosemary Sue King, Harrisonburg, VA; Barbara Ann Tapping (spouse, Jack), Harrisonburg, VA; Nancy Elizabeth Ross (spouse, Dr. Wesley), Harrisonburg, VA; and Bonnie Lou Bennet (spouse, Richard), Deforest, WI. Step daughters, Jane Garfield (spouse, Rev. Jim), Central City, NE; Dr. Peggy Holloway, Omaha, NE; and stepson, Stephen Holloway, New York City. One first cousin, Russell Gregory (spouse, Nancy), Denver, CO. Four grandsons: Dan Gerber, Paul Gerber, Creighton (spouse, Lorelei) Gerber, and Drew Gerber. Also surviving are grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.
Private family funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Monday, February 1, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church, Concordia with Rev. Melanie Adams officiating. Burial will follow at the Steele City Cemetery, Steele City, NE. Public visitation will be Sunday, January 31, 2021 from 2-8 pm at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia. In lieu of flowers the Memorials may be given to Cloud County Community College, the Concordia Senior Center, or the Concordia First United Methodist Church Crusaders Sunday School Class in care of the funeral home.
