Terry G. Johns, 79

DALTON – Terry G. Johns, age 79, passed away on April 24, 2025.

Born on June 11, 1945 in Massillon, OH to the late Paul and Ruby L. (Garnett) Johns, he was a longtime resident of Dalton, previously of Kidron. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force Reserve during the Vietnam War he was a graduate of Northwestern High School in Wayne County.  Terry then attended various Universities developing his knowledge of Law Enforcement which would take him into his career as an officer with the Ohio State Patrol, a Deputy Sherriff with the Wayne County Sherriff’s department and Chief of Police for West Salem. He was also a field agent for the Ohio Attorney General, Wayne County Commissioner from 1979 to 1982, Owner and operator of Freds Cheese House, Owner of Wayco Oil Field, Safety Director at NOWSCO, Safety Director for Starcon, and retired as safety and training manager for the builder of the Amazon complex in Akron.  A member of Dalton Village Council for many years, Terry loved to eat out and spend time with his family at home or on his house boat at Atwood Lake.  His family thought of him as dedicated, compassionate, brave, intelligent, and always fair.  He was an incredible human being and an amazing father whose love, and wisdom will be with his family forever.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia M. “Patty” Johns; sister, Dreana Johns; brothers, Mike Johns, Ronnie Johns, and Richard Root, he is survived by his children, Aaron (Heather) Johns of Smithville, Amy Flinner of Orrville; grandchildren, Savannah, Keegan, and Emma; brother, Frank (Cheryl) Bishop of Congress, OH; sister-in-law, Lucy Hanna of Wooster; many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of both the Smithville Western Care Center – Willows wing and WellSpring Hospice for their care of Terry.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at 11a.m. at Dalton Cemetery, South Church St., Dalton, OH, 44618.  Procession to the cemetery will form between 10 and 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday at the Zak-Thacker and Monbarren Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Dalton, OH, 44618.  Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to WellSpring Hospice, 3905 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, OH, 44053.  Online obituary and guest registry are available at www.zakmonbarrenfh.com
